It's getting very hard to work full-time and try to keep up with my personal projects at the same time. I know that my personal projects will be more fulfilling for me in the long-run, but I get home so drained that I can't get myself to work.

I've been trying to use the techniques found in The Now Habit, in particular, using the pull method to try to entice me toward my goals rather than trying to push myself with fear. The problem is that although my mind is very willing to get started, my body is so tired that work is a struggle. I can't squeeze more than an hour and a half of extra work a day, even though I'd like to do 3 hours.

My projects are piling up, so I have to find the energy from somewhere...

This was one of my first thoughts when I got up this morning: Only 13 more years until I'm 40. I have many ideas for what I'd like to do with my life, and I'd like to get most of them done before that looming half-way point of my life. Before today, I had always felt ageless - like I had all the time in the world to achieve my goals. I guess being less than two thirds of the way from turning 40 has suddenly plucked me from my daydream.

I can remember my father turning 40. I was 15. Now I can't help but feel that I have a lot of catching up to do.

Conversation with a younger self

When I was a kid, I was convinced that I wouldn't find someone to love me (because of my huge glasses, gnarly teeth, etc.) so I would have to become a nun. Thankfully, I have much nicer glasses now and my dad put down a huge chunk of change to get my teeth fixed. Needless to say, I feel much better about myself now ;)

Thanks to Kate Beaton ([info]beatonna ) for suggesting this idea on her journal. Her conversations with her kid-self are hilarious (as are the rest of her comics) so you should definitely check her out if you haven't already.

Gas Receipt
Peek OilThe gallon of gas recently climbed to a bit more than $4 here in Atlanta, and I scanned my receipt to commemorate the occasion. I drive a Scion Xa, which is a little more like a roller skate than a car, so I get great gas mileage and usually only spend about $140 a month on gas.

How many people out there pay about that amount just to fill their tank? If all you do is go back and forth from work to home, with the occasional trip to the supermarket or mall, do you really need such a huge car?

Woman with headdressI attended a friend's graduation ceremony today and, given the great diversity of the students, there was a fair amount of people watching to do. Case in point: across from where I was sitting there was a group of African women with amazing headdresses. Given that graduation ceremonies are, uh, kind of long, I managed to sketch out a couple of the women in situ. Sadly, I didn't have anything to color with, but the vividness of color of their costumes was truly stunning.

Pictured here is a woman with a beautiful profile.

Modern CubiclesThe company I work for moved its headquarters to a new location today and upon arriving we were met with a resource meant to improve communication: half-sized cubicles. Although the cubes are generally bigger in area, the wall height is so low that you can see what everyone is doing at their desk clear across the room.

I suppose you could call being able to talk to the person three cubes over by just raising your voice an improvement in communication, but it just spells pain for anyone in the middle trying to hold a telephone conversation... It also means everyone in the room can get a whiff of your left-over fish lunch.

Feist from memory

As I had mentioned earlier, I managed to go to a Feist concert - it was amazing! She puts on a great show and has a awesome band with incredibly talented musicians touring with her. If you ever get the chance to see them live, I highly recommend it.

I didn't think to take my sketch journal to the concert itself (it was kind of dark outside anyway), but I did manage to make a quick sketch afterwards. There was an additional guy on the right side of the stage but he was almost completely obscured by the audio equipment... Also, I pasted the concert ticket into my journal so a portion of it is visible here.

Guacamole

I completely understand why a restaurant would actively encourage its employees to speak only English - not only will non-native speakers learn the language more quickly, but it also makes the company look more cohesive and professional. However, I think this particular manager was taking things a bit too far.

During the transaction, I was placing my order in Spanish and the employee was responding only in English, which is weird but fine I guess. At the end of the order, he asked me if I would like 'guacamole' and said the word with the correct Spanish pronunciation - it is a Spanish word, after all. Sadly, the manager corrected the poor guy, instructing him to pronounce the word as 'gwacamolee'. Don't you think that's a bit much?

Side note: this image has an overlapping ticket in my sketch journal because this story happened just before going to see a Feist concert.

"The Bear and the Bees" fable illustrationThis is an illustration I created for one of my favorite Aesop fables, called "The Bear and the Bees". It goes something like this:

"Their honey I'll have when I please;
Who cares for such small things as Bees?"
Said the Bear; but the stings
Of these very small things
Left him not very much at his ease.

You may not be familiar with Aesop's name, but I'm sure you've heard of his work: "The Boy Who Cried Wolf", "The Tortoise and the Hare", and "The Goose and the Golden Eggs" are just some of the stories that we collectively call "Aesop's Fables".

If you'd like to read more fables, be sure to visit the Baby's Own Aesop, a beautifully illustrated collection of some of Aesop's fables.

I just added a syndication feed for my blog at http://blog.jennifermontes.com ([info]jennifermontes). In addition to that, I also try to maintain a MySpace profile, a Facebook profile, a Twitter feed, and an as-of-yet-undeveloped Portfolio site.

How many online identities are you trying to handle at once?

Immersive Media has created an amazing camera system that can capture a 360° view of a scene. What's more, they have also created a software system that merges the camera views into a seamless experience.

Basically, instead of being limited by the camera's frame, you can take your mouse and move the frame so that more of the scene is visible. Check out the demo video at http://demos.immersivemedia.com/.

Maybe if someone combines this technology with Johnny Chung Lee's Wii head tracking system, a truly immersive, hands-free 360° video experience will be available!
